Ultrasound
An ultrasound exam is a safe diagnostic procedure that uses
very high-frequency sound waves to produce an image of many of the internal
structures of the body. Ultrasound was originally developed in the late 1950’s.
Over the years the ultrasound equipment has become very sophisticated, resulting
in images of outstanding detail and clarity.
Ultrasounds are performed by highly skilled technologists who
have specialized in sonographic imaging. They are known as sonographers. Ultrasound
is a specialty area within our Medical Imaging Department. This non-invasive
specialty utilizes high frequency sound waves to display images of the internal
organs and structures. The sonographer provides patient imaging information
under the supervision of a physician specializing in radiology. The sonographer
assists the physician in gathering pertinent anatomical, physiological, and/or
pathological data necessary to diagnose a variety of conditions.
Ultrasound imaging is done on the third level of the medical
center directly above the Emergency Department as well as on the ground floor
of the Women’s Center in the new Centers of Excellence.
The Ultrasound Section consists
of five Certified Ultrasound Technologists and two transporters and is managed
by David Fugett RT (R). We are on call 24 hours for emergencies including weekends and holidays.
This section performs over 12,000 exams each year. You may contact the Ultrasound
Section by calling (479) 314-6200 or by emailing the section manager David
