St. Edward Mercy Diabetes Education Program
According to the American Diabetes Association (ADA), approximately 20.8 million children and adults in the United States, or 7 percent of the population, have diabetes. While an estimated 14.6 million have been diagnosed, 6.2 million people are unaware that they have the disease.
St. Edward Mercy Medical Center strongly believes that self-management education is an integral component of care for people with Diabetes Mellitus. The Diabetes Education staff at St. Edward Mercy provides information for inpatients, outpatients and family members on diabetes management including diet counseling, blood glucose monitoring, medications, and risk reduction.
Inpatient Diabetes Education Program
As part of the Inpatient Diabetes Education Program at St. Edward Mercy Medical Center a diabetes nurse educator and/or dietitian will assess educational needs and provide individual instruction and information necessary for appropriate self-management skills for discharge from hospital.
Outpatient Diabetes Education Program
St. Edward Medical Center’s Diabetes Education Program has been recognized by the ADA for Quality Self-Management Education. It has maintained this distinction since 1994. Access to the outpatient program is through physician referral. This program offers individual needs assessment then, based on individual needs, individual or group classes with a diabetes educator and a diabetes registered dietitian.
