St. Edward Mercy Joins the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Campaigns

Beginning in December 2004, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) launched its “100K Lives Campaign”. A nation-wide voluntary initiative, the 100K Lives Campaign’s objective was to enlist and encourage U.S. hospitals to implement changes in care proven to prevent avoidable deaths.  Through their work on the campaign’s interventions, combined with other national and local improvement efforts, these facilities saved an estimated 122,300 lives in 18 months.

122,300 Lives Saved

There are six evidence-based quality improvement changes at the core of the ‘100K Lives campaign’. Committed to the best outcomes for our patients, St. Edward’s elected to implement all six changes that have shown to save lives. The campaign’s change initiatives are:

  • Deploy Rapid Response Teams.
Prevent death in patients who are progressively failing outside the ICU by implementing Rapid Response Teams.
  • Deliver Reliable, Evidence-Based Care for Acute Myocardial Infarction.
Prevent deaths among patients hospitalized for AMI by ensuring the reliable delivery of evidence-based care.
  • Prevent Adverse Drug Events.
Prevent deaths by implementing medication reconciliation procedures.
  • Prevent Central Line Infections.
Prevent deaths by implementing a set of interventions to reduce catheter infection rates.
  • Prevent Surgical Site Infections.
Prevent deaths by implementing a reliable set of interventions that help choose and appropriately time perioperative antibiotics.
  • Prevent Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia.
Prevent deaths by implementing a set of interventions known as the “ventilator bundle.”

Later, expanding on its first campaign, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) implemented its new initiative, the “5 Million Lives Campaign”. The expanded focus aims to protect patients from medical harm over the next two years (December 2006 – December 2008) St. Edward Mercy has chosen to participate in the expanded campaign now implementing an additional six changes initiatives:

  • Prevent Harm from High-Alert Medications...starting with a focus on anticoagulants, sedatives, narcotics, and insulin
  • Reduce Surgical Complications...by reliably implementing all of the changes recommended by SCIP, the Surgical Care Improvement Project (www.medqic.org /scip)
  • Prevent Pressure Ulcers...by reliably using science-based guidelines for their prevention
  • Reduce Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infection…by reliably  implementing scientifically proven infection control practices
  • Deliver Reliable, Evidence-Based Care for Congestive Heart Failure…to avoid readmissions
  • Get Boards on Board…by defining and spreading the best known leveraged processes for hospital boards of directors, so that they can become far more effective in accelerating organizational progress toward safe care
