Sr. Mooney Earns Mayor’s Spirit of the Frontier Award

Fort Smith, Ark. – January 5, 2009- Sister Reginald Mooney was named a recipient of the City of Fort Smith’s Spirit of the Frontier award at the Spirit of the Frontier ceremony on December 18, 2008 at the Fort Smith Convention Center.

The Spirit of the Frontier award is Fort Smith’s highest honor and is given to individuals who have been examples of the Frontier Spirit.

“The Frontier Spirit has helped to make Fort Smith, Arkansas one of the most outstanding cities in the United States of America,” said Mayor Baker.

Sr. Mooney, 96, is a Religious Sister of Mercy who has been instrumental in defining and shaping St. Edward Mercy Health System. She worked at St. Edward Mercy from July 1970 to May 2007. She continues to volunteer twice a week at St. Edward Mercy.  She has been a faithful servant not only to the visitors, patients, and staff of St. Edward Mercy, but also the Fort Smith community as a whole.

Sr. Mooney was one of 15 recipients who received the award. The ceremony included musical entertainment, remarks by Mayor Baker, and a charge by the mayor to leave the Fort Smith community a better place.
